Humans are cultural beings. What is Culture?

Dictionary definition: the way of life, especially the general customs and beliefs, of a particular group of people at a particular time.

Hoebel describes culture as an integrated system of learned behavior patterns which are characteristic of the members of a society and which are not a result of biological inheritance.

Individual’s Culture include: the religion, customs, manner, the economy, political views, weather, traditions, food, clothing, the music/dance/art, history and of course, the language. Based on above factors person develops beliefs, values and experiences that contributes to develop Personality of the Individual’s.

Organizational Culture is a system of shared assumptions, values and beliefs that governs how people behave in the organization. Culture is difficult to change as it is embedded in the behavior of individuals and can therefore be seen as the Personality of the organization.  

What is Connectedness?

The state of being connected and having a close relationship with other things or people. The first connectedness with culture is usually made within the family; they influence the way we see ourselves and what we think is important. How you are connected with self-culture and other’s culture is known as climate.

The climate affects the individuals/employees’ engagement, motivation, job satisfaction, physical and mental health. It has been researched that the biggest single factor impacting job satisfaction, sickness and absence is the employees’ relationship with their team leaders. Team climate is a major factor affecting success and impacting on overall team performance which is directly influenced by the team members and team leader’s climate level. Ultimately it develops the individual’s and leader’s personality and often indirectly it affects personality of organization to enlarge vision and scope when required. High-Performance leadership skills include the learning of cultural awareness and Emotional Intelligence too. It helps leaders to drive financial performances and achieving high potential goals to uplift their organizational growth.

Being disconnected from cultural heritage can lead a person to question who you really are and where you belong. This may cause one to feel lost and isolated. Connecting with culture can have a positive impact on one’s sense of belonging and identity – and in turn, on one’s mental health and overall wellbeing. This wellbeing helps an individual to exhibit joyful and impressive personality.

Being in multicultural environment, meaning of “multicultural” is: including people who have many different customs and beliefs, it’s important to understand and respect each other’s culture to raise the climate level all around. Cultural awareness and Emotional Intelligence make a person to understand each other. Emotional Intelligence means identifying, understanding self and others emotions and behave by managing them. Learning and practicing Emotional Intelligence develops self as well as social awareness. It drives an individual or an organization towards the path of growth by improving and hiking the professional relationship bonds.
